Andy Downer is a composer, sound engineer, and producer currently based in the Northern Rivers of NSW. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Contemporary Music from the University of New England, Northern Rivers, in 1993. During that time he was awarded the Dolphin Award for Music and Technology (1991), and the Mike Perjanik Scholarship for Composition (1992). He was recruited by Rick Turk (Four Corners theme, Sale of the Century theme) to arrange musical excerpts for the TV game show, Face The Music.
Andy established his own composing and audio production business, A.D.STUDIO, in the year 2000. He has released 11 production music albums for Beatbox Music, which have enjoyed success in some 20-plus territories around the world. In 2008 he signed with EMI New York/Quantum Tracks to compose and produce five more production music albums. He composes in many genres including film score, ambient, electronica, pop, funk, jazz, lounge, solo piano, comical, and kids.
Andy has scored the music for several documentaries, including James Cameron’s James Cameron’s Vision, Telcast International’s Komodo, Kingdom of the Dragon and Earth TV, and The Weekend Australian’s Wild Australia series. His work airs on both local and international TV and radio, and on cable networks including as Discovery Channel. In 2008 he performed piano for Olivia Newton John’s Duets album with Delta Goodrem.
Influenced by artists such as Peter Gabriel, Depeche Mode, Kate Bush and Tears For Fears, his debut album Sign Of Life was released in 2014 via the alias Strange Days On Earth. It received critical acclaim from legendary US audio mastering engineer Bob Katz – “find the very finest and best stereo system and you'll be blown away... it is not often that productions of this quality are put out” – and won the NCEIA Dolphin Award for album of the year.
